What's a screen capture?
A screen capture allows you to take a photo of your screen. With a Mac, you can do this easily by pressing Command/Shift/4 simultaneously (the command key is next to the space bar). Your mouse will change to a target symbol. Simply click and drag over the area you wish to photograph. When you release the click, you will hear a shutter sound. Your picture will be saved on the desktop as 'picture 1.png.' Snow Leopard now says 'Screenshot (date).png'
What is a screencast?
Basically a screencast is recording what is on your computer screen. It's useful for creating tutorials as it allows viewers to see what's happening on your monitor, mouse movements and allows you to narrate.
There are times when you need to make a screenshot that should meet the following requirements:
• standard desktop picture (aqua blue or plain white, for instance)
• no desktop clutter
Desktop Curtain displays your favorite desktop picture just in front of your real desktop, so you won't have to clean up each time you need to take a screenshot. And it's really easy to control — just control- or right-click on Desktop Curtain's desktop picture to access its settings or quit. Free Download. Desktop Curtain 1.1 runs natively on both Intel- and PowerPC-based Macs and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later.
If you are running Snow Leopard on a Mac, did you know Quicktime Player X now lets you do screencasts?
Open Quicktime and go to File > New Screen Recording and use the pulldown menu (the little arrow) to select your settings and save destination.
